Don’t Go ‘Nose Blind’: Keep Your Home Fresh & Airy

by - January 10, 2018

When it comes to our homes, we tend to focus mainly on the clutter and mess that is in them. Which is perfectly fine, of course, because homes that are messy and cluttered aren’t nice places to spend time in. However, what is important to remember is that when it comes to your home and making it a nice space, it is not just about how it looks, but also how it smells.

Studies have shown that one of the first things that people notice when stepping into a new place is the scent that place has. The smell a home has is what many people form an opinion about it and its occupants on, so making sure that your home smells fresh and airy is just as important as ensuring that it is neat and tidy.

The problem is that when we live with a certain smell, such as the smell of our dog or certain foods that we eat regularly, we no longer notice it and go ‘nose blind’. However, people who enter our homes notice it, even if we don’t.

The good news is that ensuring that your home smells wonderfully fresh and airy is much easier than you would think. Below is a guide to what you should and shouldn’t do, to ensure that your home always smells fresh.

Don’t overcompensate with heavily scented air fresheners

A lot of aerosol air fresheners don’t get rid of bad odours; they simply mask them. These scents are always incredibly heavy, so heavy in fact that they sting the back of your throat if accidentally breathed in. Instead of misting your home in these scents that simply cover bad smells, it’s best to be a little more creative. There are aerosol sprays that are designed to neutralize bad odours instead of merely covering them up, and these can work really well - Oust is one of the better ones.

Invest in quality diffusers

If you want to give your home a scent, make sure to do so using methods that actually work well. One of the best methods for making your home smell delightful without using an overpowering scent is investing in a scent diffuser machine of some kind. Or, if you aren’t a fan of these, then a reed diffuser, incense, or scented candles could work well. These different types of scent makers can also all be teamed together, just make sure to stick with one neutral smell, such as vanilla, for instance.

Keep all windows open (even just a crack)

There is nothing better for a fresh smelling home than fresh air, which is why it is vital that you open all of the windows in your home each day for at least an hour or two. Even on cold days, opening your home’s windows, even just a crack, can help to ensure that your home has lots of fresh air circulating around it. The more fresh air your home has in it, the fresher it will smell.

There you have it, everything that you need to know about ensuring that you don’t go ‘nose blind’ and that your home smells as fresh as a daisy all of the time.
