What's Causing Your Skin Complaint?

by - January 16, 2019

Your skin is the largest external organ in your body. For something that's exposed to the elements all the time, it does a fairly good job of protecting your body. However, even though it serves an important purpose, it's not completely immune to problems. Some people are used to dealing with skin complaints, but sometimes they can occur out of the blue. When your skin is irritated and you're not sure why, it can be frustrating, and sometimes itchy or painful. There isn't always a clear cause but there are some common things that can lead to skin complaints.

An Infection

Sometimes, an infection could be causing an issue with your skin. Skin infections can cause a range of symptoms, from dryness and itchiness to blisters and rashes. Some infections go away on their own, and you might want to treat the symptoms in the meantime. Others might need treatment to help them go away. You can pick up treatments for some skin infections over the counter. For example, athlete's foot, a common fungal infection, has a range of treatments that you can easily pick up. Some others could require a prescription or you might want to check with your doctor or a pharmacist for a diagnosis.

A Dry Skin Condition

If your skin is dry, it could be one of a number of dry skin conditions. These can have varying causes, and sometimes occur because your skin naturally isn't very good at holding moisture. Very dry patches of skin could indicate something like eczema or psoriasis. These can sometimes be treated with moisturizers and soothing lotions, but some people find that they need a stronger treatment. Medicated ointments and creams containing steroids are sometimes used to treat dry skin conditions. Avoiding triggers that worsen the condition can also help.

An Allergic Reaction

Allergies can also cause problems with your skin, ranging from redness and itching to hives and other rashes. While some allergic reactions are mild, they can get worse. If you suspect you're allergic to something, having allergy testing can help to identify just what the allergen might be. There are many things that can cause reactions from your skin, from your laundry detergent to something that you've eaten. You might not realize that it's an allergic reaction right away, but if your skin complaint doesn't get better or keeps coming back, seeing an allegenist could solve the mystery.

Lifestyle

If your skin is generally not feeling or looking too great, there could be something in your lifestyle that's causing it. Your diet, a lack of hydration, smoking or not getting enough sleep could all lead to bad skin. Your skin needs to be kept healthy, just like any other part of your body, and it needs the right nutrients, hydration and time to heal. Living a healthier lifestyle could help to give you healthier and better looking skin.

If your skin is irritated, dry or red, there could be a number of possible causes. If it doesn't go away with home treatment, your doctor can help you.
