Pet Health Tips You Need To Know

by - January 09, 2019

Our pets are a huge part of our lives and one of the family. When we get a pet we add a new baby to our home and they become one of the best friends we have ever had. It is important for us as their owners to look after our pets throughout their lives and this will include making sure that they stay fit and healthy. Today we are going to look at some simple things you can do to keep your pet healthy this year.

Vaccinate them
Just as you would vaccinate a child to protect them from illness, you should be doing the same thing for your pets during their early life and throughout. When it comes to veterinary supplies, vaccinations are the most useful and they can be a great addition to your routine for your pet. Make sure you get them into the vets for their boosters and this will help to keep them safe from common canine illnesses.

Screening tests

As much as we may hold a conversation with our dog from time to time, they can’t speak back to us and tell us when something is wrong. This is why screening tests for our dogs are so crucial. A screening test is one which you can have done that will let you know if your pet has any underlying issues which they need to be treated. This can often go undetected without screening so it is a crucial thing to do to ensure the safety and health of your pet.

Oral hygiene

Keeping your pets mouth clean is actually simpler than it may seem and often a dental stick can be just what they need to keep their teeth sharp and clean. Just like us, animals need to keep their mouths clean to avoid gum disease and tartar build up, and we can aid this by giving them dental chews and using pet toothpaste on them every now and again. It will keep their mouth happy and prevent them forming ulcers.

Parasites

Fleas, ticks, lice… all of these things are parasites which can live on your pet and suck their blood, also risking spreading disease such as the fleas on rats which spread the Black Death back in the olden days. Obviously this isn't a worry any longer, but parasites are still annoying creatures and need to be treated. You can use flea treatments, give worming tablets and keep your pet’s fit clear and short to protect them against these bugs.

Microchip

Most dogs these days already come microchipped when you adopt them, but if they haven’t already got a microchip it is more than worth doing this as soon as you can. The reason you should microchip your pet is for security. If they were ever to run away or be stolen, their microchip could be read and this would bring them back to you. It is a great way to protect your animal even if you aren’t there with them.
