Each time that you get to January, you're on a new health kick or you’re trying to shift a few pounds for your summer body. It’s admirable. The thing is, you need to think about how your body is cleansed on the inside, and for some, that means more than just smoothies and water. For some, it’s all in the mind.

Your body should be a temple to you; somewhere sacred that you start to respect because it’s the only one that you’ve got. If you want to detox because of an addiction, and not because you want to lose a few pounds, then you know that you can find great drug detox programs to attend as part of your process for feeling good inside your head again. However, the most popular detox programs are more in the line of juicing and fasting, though neither of these things are necessary. Your body has kidneys and a liver, which means that a detox for your body is already happening.

When it comes to cleansing, it’s in the mind. You need to rid your life of the toxins, rather than rid your body. Addiction is an issue of the mind, and the factors that contribute to an addiction can trigger the use of drugs and lead you somewhere that you don’t want to go. If you can work out what your mind needs, you can start to rid yourself of the surrounding toxins that are affecting your mental health. Solid foundations, solid friends and family and security is important for your mind to function without feeling low. Here are some of the things that you can do for your mental health, so that your mental detox can be successful:

  1. Remember that you have value. Treat your body with kindness and respect and say so - out loud - so that you can hear it. Make time for those attentive moments to feel good and pay attention to your hobbies.
  2. Eat well. Start learning what’s in your food and eat nutritiously.
  3. Exercise as much as you can; even going for a walk counts. The hormones released with exercise decrease depression and improves your mood.
  4. Sleep. Sleeping is going to help you to heal your body and feel good about yourself. A lack of sleep can contribute to depressive feelings.
  5. Surround yourself with great people; people with strong family connections are those who are healthier than those without the right support network. If you have good people around you, then you have the right support when things go wrong.
  6. Give your own time to other people. If you are piling your energy into someone else, you can feel good about doing something to support another person. It’s great for your own satisfaction.

Mental health isn’t a joke; you need to detox your mind to feel secure, happy and healthy. Your life is in your hands, cleansing your mind is the first step.
