Best Postpartum Exercises For New Moms

by - February 12, 2018

You did it - congratulations! You've given birth to the baby you've been carrying for the last nine months, and now they're here. This is an overwhelming feeling in itself, and you'll want to spend as much time with your baby as possible. This is where you bond and continue on from the relationship that began when they were in your belly.

You may want to think about getting active again. But you're the only person that can judge when you're ready to do that. You know your body, and it's important to listen to it.

If you do find that you're ready now, it's important to take things easy to begin with so you can see how your body reacts, and then you can build up from there. There are plenty of exercises that are great as a comeback because you can do them as calm, or intense as you wish, while working the areas you want to, without putting too much strain on your body.

Here's a few to get you started.

Cycling
Cycling is an easy thing to do that works by burning fat, toning up and also improves your mobility in your joints, which is an extra bonus after having a baby because a lot of tension is put on your knees from carrying the weight. You can start off really easy and then build it up depending on how your body responds. One great thing about cycling is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home, all you need to do is invest in an exercise bike, and then you can do it in the living room while your baby is having a nap. Having said that, it is important that you make the effort to leave the house so that you don't get stuck in a routine - even if it's just a few laps around the block. Always make sure that you're protected in many different ways, from the helmet and knee pads you wear, to the professionals that support you like Velosure.

Dancing
Let's face it, who doesn't love a good boogie every now and again? And what makes it even better, is that you can get fit from it. Dancing is a form of cardio, just like running - but more fun. The more you do, the more calories and fat you burn, but the great thing about this is that it doesn't feel like you're working out, it's just you letting your hair down. You can go to classes like Zumba for example, that will get you out of the house and mixing with other like-minded people. This is good because it's encouraging you to be social. Or you can do it at home too. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that you can follow. Or just stick on your favourite tunes and unwind. You could even do this with your baby; hold them and have a little bounce. You may find they really enjoy the movement, and it's just one of the many other ways you can have that precious baby and me time.

Swimming
Swimming is an incredible form of exercise that engages your whole entire body. This is a wonderful way of keeping active because it's very easy on the body, and also makes you feel weightless. Not only is this great for your physical being, but it works wonders on your mentality too. Swimming is a well-known reliever of stress. Not only because your brain releases endorphins, but also because it holds a very calming effect on the mind. You can be still, you can float, you can glide - it's a form of meditation, but in the water. Physically, you're improving mobility in your body, and flexibility, while burning off any excess fat. This is also an excellent way of toning up from head to toe. Essentially, you're able to cover many different areas while only doing one activity, which is especially great when you don't have much time on your hands.

And there you have it. As you can see, these are the basics - the most popular and also the most effective, but if none of them seem to interest you, by all means do your own research until you find something you enjoy doing, because that's the most important thing. It's no good doing an activity you hate because you'll end up miserable and won't continue with it. So find your happy.
