I am asked all the time about traveling. How I do it, tips and tricks, where I go, how I save, everything. One of my travel must haves is coming home to a clean house. After traveling, especially now that I am traveling with a baby, there is nothing better than coming home to a clean house. Trips for me these days aren't as relaxing as they were before motherhood. Now I need a vacation from my vacations. What I want to do when I get home from a trip is relax, not clean up a mess from 1+ weeks ago. So here are my tips for returning to a clean home and how to prepare your cleaning routine before travel.

Take It Out!
Take everything out. All bins, recycling, delivery boxes, everything. Make sure every bin in the house in empty. I learned that nothing is worse than leaving your garbage for over a week. Now I am sharing the lesson I learned the hard way with you. Check your kitchen, bathroom, office etc. Empty it all. (oh, and don't forget those diaper pails!)

Run The Dishwasher
Even if it isn't completely full I make sure to run my dishwasher. Coming home to clean dishes is amazing. Also, the smells that can come from dirty, rotten, sitting dishes are not pleasant. Plus, food that has sat and had the time to get stuck on is much harder to remove. So I save myself the hassle and make sure to start the dishwasher before heading out the door for a trip. I use the Cascade Platinum ActionPacs and pair it with Cascade Rinse Aid Platinum. Even with hard water I think this combination is the best I have ever used in a dishwasher. My dishes come out clean and spot free every time. So if you have hard water I especially recommend trying these out.

Launder Everything
I always make sure to wash all rugs, towels, bedding, dirty laundry etc.. Pretty much everything that can be laundered, I launder. Well that's dirty and needs it anyways. Returning to clean bedding may possibly be the greatest thing ever. Here is the link to my Homemade Laundry Soap I like to also toss in some extra scent boosters to assure I come home to ultimate freshness. My favorite are the Gain Fireworks Duets Wildflower Waterfall

Deep Clean
I have a deep cleaning routine, a weekly routine, and a daily routine. Pretty much the three days leading up to a trip I do them all. Rooms I make sure to deep clean the most are the kitchen and bathroom. I will also vacuum and wipe down the trim throughout my home. Focusing on window sills, corners, and doorways.

Tidy
The night before leaving for a trip I make a run through my home and tidy everything. Milo's toys, our closets, my desk area, every single thing. I wipe down all surfaces, contact areas and dust. I also go through and sanitize my entire home with Lysol Disinfecting Wipes. I make sure everything is put away in it's place and nothing is left out besides the bags we are taking.

(Tip: I pack and leave the bags by the door the day before leaving for travel and double check that night)

Toys
Before Milo and I go anywhere I like to clean his toys by running them through the dishwasher or washing machine. All his teething and hard plastic toys I toss in the top rack of the dishwasher alone (with no other dishes). For his plush toys I will launder them in the washing machine and tumble dry on low heat. Any of his plush toys that have stains from his chewing I spray with Shout Triple-Acting Stain Remover Spray and let sit for 15 minutes before washing. This is also apart of my weekly cleaning routine.

Clean Out The Fridge
This goes with running the dishwasher. Before leaving for a trip I make sure to clean out all left overs and place emptied storage containers in the dishwasher. I also toss any foods due to expire while I will be away. Not much is worse than coming home after a trip and opening the fridge and being punched in the face by spoiled food odors. I clean the entire fridge as well. Wipe down all shelves, door storage, and wash out all drawers. I have stainless appliances so I wipe down all stainless with Method Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polisher as well.

(Tip: After cleaning out the fridge open a box of baking soda and place in the rear of the fridge. This will aid in reducing any odor.)
